All activities use the adventure playground to allow for LIFE-SIZE science but can be facilitated indoors in the event of inclement weather. Activities are scaffolded to be age-appropriate and adjusted based on your grade level.
Pre K - 5th Grade
Catapults: Experiment with large and small-scale catapults. Fling everything from rubber duckies to pom-poms. We’ll make it rain with discovery. Every child creates their own catapult to take home.
Rockets: Explode bottles and film canisters up into the sky. Explore propulsion while making the best kind of mess. Want to add paint to your fuel…why not?
Capsule Drop: Design a capsule to protect a Pringle upon impact. Experiment with drag, absorption, and suspension with a variety of recycled materials. Release from over 18 feet in the air!
Liquid Nitrogen: Explore states of matter by flash freezing a variety of materials including food, rubber, and boiling water. Smash crystalized flowers and sample NO2 cheese puffs.
6th - 8th Grade
Creativity Workshop: Participate in fun, collaborative design-thinking games that stimulate creativity and exercise the skills of divergent thinking. The Junkyard creates a safe space where students can take risks with new ideas.
DIY Putt-Putt: In small teams, use “junk” to create the perfect hole of mini golf. Teams must consider function, aesthetic, and “fun-factor.” After sharing their design process and goals, all students will have an opportunity to test each hole.
JunkMaster Challenge: Based on the BBC show TaskMaster, compete in open-ended group tasks with guidance, constraints, and minimal “rules.” I.E. Using junk and all members of your group, build the tallest tower in 5 minutes.
Liquid Nitrogen: Explore states of matter by flash freezing a variety of materials including food, rubber, and boiling water. Smash crystalized flowers and sample NO2 cheese puffs.
