Fall 2026: Classes Start September 2nd
experimental Learning
Our homeschool programs are built on the Junkyard Curricula, a unique, hands-on educational framework that aligns with national standards while supporting 21st-century skill development. Rooted in creativity, critical thinking, and curiosity, our programs are designed to spark conversation and connection through experiential learning.
- Life-size Science: Chemistry – Fall Quarter 1
First rule of chemistry: Don’t lick it. (Seriously.)
Get ready to mix, fizz, foam, and discover! This hands-on chemistry semester invites young scientists to explore the colorful world of chemical reactions through exciting experiments, larger-than-life demonstrations, and plenty of opportunities to get curious (and sometimes a little messy). From erupting elephant toothpaste and bubbling potions to rainbow reactions, slime, crystals, and colorful chemical transformations, students will build science process skills by asking questions, making predictions, testing ideas, observing results, and drawing conclusions.
Our “Next Level” classes cover the same engaging, hands-on topics as our standard homeschool science courses but dive deeper into the concepts, scientific vocabulary, and critical thinking skills, making them a great fit for older learners or students ready for an extra challenge.
Along the way, students will learn how to think like scientists while safely exploring the fascinating chemistry all around us. Because the best way to learn science is to do science! - Life-size Science: Space Science – Fall Quarter 2
Space is a lot easier to understand when you can become part of it!
In this hands-on semester, students will explore the wonders of our solar system through movement, experimentation, and creative problem-solving. Together we’ll investigate the planets, moons, gravity, orbital motion, the life cycle of stars, and the incredible story of human space exploration. Instead of simply reading about these big ideas, students will use their bodies to model planetary movements and transform textbook diagrams into dynamic, three-dimensional experiences.
We’ll create icy comets, build impact craters, observe gases in action, investigate gravity and motion through playful experiments, and tackle engineering challenges inspired by real space missions. Along the way, students will develop science process skills by asking questions, making predictions, testing ideas, collecting observations, and communicating their discoveries.
Life-Size Science brings the universe down to Earth—because the best way to understand how the cosmos works is to jump in and explore it together. - Life-Size Science: Lego Engineering – Fall Quarters 1&2
In this hands-on, experiential class we will create a variety of simple LEGO builds that help kids understand the basics of mechanics, structures, movement and aesthetics. Each day will cover new concepts and incorporate past concepts all folded into playful and imaginative scenarios.

Homeschool FAQs
The concept of the “adventure playground” is rooted in three things: an ethos of unrestricted play, the presence of “playworkers,” and the absence of commercially manufactured play structures. Essential to the experience are “loose parts,” variables that create opportunities for building, inventing, and investigating. Loose parts can be anything from pine cones to planks to rope.
Junkyard has a very small staff and a similarly tight budget, thus we cannot issue refunds. However, in the case of severe weather conditions, the class may be canceled for the safety of our staff and students, and a refund will be issued.
Each student is responsible for bringing all of the food that they will require for the class/classes, as well as a full, reusable water bottle. There will be opportunities throughout the day for students to refill their water bottles. Please pack a nut-free lunch and 2 hearty snacks for full-day students. Students who register for a singular class should have a water bottle and a snack. Students who register for a single class are welcome to stay with their parents for lunch or play after checkout but are not under the supervision of junkyard staff.
The Junkyard has small, shaded areas in the 6000 square foot courtyard and large garage doors that provide access to the 2000 square foot indoor commons space. Please bring your student with sunscreen already applied, and additional amounts to apply during the day. See below for information about inclement weather.
There is no bad weather, only poor clothing choices. Colorado’s weather is unpredictable, please send your camper with seasonally appropriate clothing. In the case of lightning, threat of tornado, or other serious weather events, campers will be sheltered indoors
Our class is small – a maximum of 18 kids per session. We have a programs manager, instructor, and an instructor assistant. Staff are trained professional educators, fully committed to the Junkyard Social Club philosophy of care and child-led exploration.
We are expanding our homeschool classes for older kids (9-12 years old) in the Fall of 2025 when we will have the capacity to do so.
All materials are provided by Junkyard. Notebooks are optional for class. You are welcome to send your student a notebook and pencils. Each student will be provided with a binder to keep and collect their notes.
Siblings are allowed to join the class during breaks and play time, but should stay with their parents while their older sibling is attending class. The content and experiments are designed for students ages 6 and up, they are not appropriate for younger students as it requires more manual dexterity.
Parents are welcome to stay in the space. Grab a cup of coffee and get some work done! Or you can drop off your kid and go home/run errands.
